Hall of Famer Jim Cassidy proved he was not a spent force when it came to winning Group 1 races after a superbly judged ride on Grand Marshal in the Sydney Cup.
Known for his great front-running rides, Cassidy sat quiet at the rear of the field on Chris Waller’s stayer and put the $41 chance into the race at the 600 metres before he flew down the outside to defeat stablemate Who Shot Thebarman in a photo finish.
He was coming off a third-place effort in the Chairmans Handicap when racing on an unfavourable part of the track and proved himself to be the superior stayer in a high-class field.
