Top New Zealand trainer John Sargent knows a thing or two about training Oaks horses. He’d won Oaks races in Melbourne, Brisbane and his native country before taking on the Australian Oaks at Royal Randwick with Thunder Lady and Gust Of Wind.
Thunder Lady had the form on the board and was the pick of the Sargent pair, but failed to handle the wet track – something her stablemate had no issues with.
Gust Of Wind’s talents were on show at her race debut at Scone on February 23, when she won over 1400 metres after coming from six lengths behind the second last horse at one stage to record a remarkable win.
From there, Sargent took her to Hawkesbury where she won over 1600 metres before finishing a creditable fourth in the Adrian Knox Stakes on day one of The Championships on Easter Monday.
It convinced Sargent to pay the late entry fee into the $1m Group 1 over 2400 metres and Tye Angland produced a superb rails ride as she beat Winx by 2 ½ lengths.
