When Mongolian Khan strode away with the New Zealand Derby in February in 2015, he was one of the top picks to come to The Championships and win the Australian version of the classic event.
But after a poor debut run in Sydney, where he ran fifth in the Rosehill Guineas to the horse he beat in the NZ Derby, Volkstok’n’barrell, the punters wondered if he’d lost his previous form.
In the derby he was sent out a $6.50 chance behind favourties Volkstok’n’barrell and the Godolphin-trained Hauraki which were rated $4 hopes.
The Murray Baker-trained Mongolian Khan, ridden by Opie Bosson, got a spilt between the two favourites and drove through to show superior staying abilities and take out the $2m classic by three quarters of a length from Hauraki.
It was Murray’s second ATC Derby in three years after It’s A Dundeel won in 2013.
