2019 Hawkesbury - Provincial Championships Qualifier

A quinella gave Kim Waugh a dream start in the Hawkesbury Qualifier as a race fit Safado ran down his stablemate Spring Charlie to book their spots in the final. Spring Charlie, first-up from a break, was forced to do a lot of the chasing in a fast run race and jockey Blake Shinn was left in front a fair way from home while Safado, appreciating the solid tempo, peeled out with 300m to run and under the urgings of Jason Collett picked him up near the line. They broke right away from third placed It’s So Obvious who did a good job after sitting third, and also chasing the speed, and she earned herself a place in the final.

2019 Newcastle - Provincial Championships Qualifier

Pre-post Provincial Championships favourite Archedemus had to do it the hard way but he underlined just how hard he’ll be to topple come the Final with a dominant performance at Newcastle. While the margin wasn’t big the Gwenda Markwell-trained galloper made it five wins on end as he fended off the Damien Lane stablemates Oakfield Missile and Oakfield Twilight from Wyong. Archedemus appeared vulnerable as they straightened but jockey Chad Lever coaxed the best out of the five-year-old who certainly knows where the winning post is.

2018 Gosford Provincial Championships Qualifier

Trainer Kris Lees and Kim Waugh again dominated a Central Coast heat, having run one-two at Wyong two weeks earlier, and it was a Lees-trained mare in Serene Miss that saluted over an up and comer in Newsfan from the Waugh camp. Serene Miss was partnered by Aaron Bullock who heaped praise on the mare after her strong win while the lightly raced Newsfan lost no admirers as he was held up for runs at vital stages early in the straight and should relish stepping up to 1400m. Michelle Ritchie’s 100/1 chance Can’t Find Snippy continued his consistent form, he was always on the speed and was still there fighting it out at the finish earning a spot in the Final in third place.

2018 Kembla Grange Provincial Championships Qualifier

Gwenda Markwell is always hard to beat in her home track Qualifier and so it was again in 2018 as the lightly raced three-year-old filly Mandylion, at just her fourth start, led all the way to take out the Kembla Grange heat. Ridden confidently by Jess Taylor, Mandylion gave a strong kick in the straight and held off another local in Old Man Sam, trained by Mick Tubman, who charged down the outside when the race was all over while Kris Lees has yet another qualifier with import Tawfiq Boy clinging onto third after trying to go with the winner in the home straight.

Wyong - 2018 Provincial Championships Qualifier

Kris Lees was always going to have a strong hand in the Provincial Championships and one of his leading hopes Just Dreaming was sent out favourite and showed her class with a dominant performance to win the opening heat of 2018. The mare, ridden by Aaron Bullock, raced wide throughout and looked to have conceded too much ground around the turn but once she balanced up she powered over the top of the Kim Waugh-trained Manhattan Mist to score. It was a game effort from the runner-up while Brad Widdup’s consistent mare Witches charged home late to snatch third and also qualify for the Final.

2018 The Provincial Championship Final – Royal Randwick

Kris Lees provided almost half the field for the Provincial Championships Final and it was a very promising mare in Serene Miss who proved superior. A winner of five of her six starts going into the Final, the four-year-old was presented with a perfect run by Jason Collett and she chimed in with about 300m to run. From there it was plain sailing and Serene Miss held over a length on a slightly unlucky Newsfan, who dashed through late, with Plaisir running on from last to claim the minor prize. Easing favourite Just Dreaming finished sixth.
