The Championships Generates Extraordinary Wagering Turnover Increase

The Championships in 2016 at Royal Randwick has reflected an extraordinary level of interest among punters with total wagering turnover increasing by 30% nationally among TABs and corporate bookmakers across the two days compared to last year, and 19% on 2014.

Turnover for Day 1 of The Championships across corporate bookmakers and TABs grew strongly with an increase of 39% compared to 2015. However, this represents an unfair comparison as turnover on the 2015 meeting was affected by the postponement to Easter Monday.

Accordingly, comparing the corresponding 2014 meeting total turnover in 2016 grew by 29%.

The total turnover on Day 2 of The Championships with corporate bookmakers and TABs increased by 21% compared to 2015.

This was especially strong among interstate TABs with their combined turnover growth exceeding 23% compared to the corresponding day in 2015, with a strong increase among recreational punters.

Turnover with corporate bookmakers also surged by more than 20% compared to Day 2 in 2015. This growth is on top of the increase in the wagering turnover on the Country and Provincial Championships Series.

“The wagering surge throughout Australia is proof that The Championships has captured punters’ interest and its growth in three years has been nothing less than phenomenal. We are confident that it will continue to build on this success in the future,” said Racing NSW Chief Executive, Mr Peter V’landys AM.
