About

Born in Berriwillock, in the Mallee District of Victoria, Darren was raised on the family farm. During this time he worked for various trainers in the area, including Jack Coffey in Birchip and John Castleman in Mildura.

Darren then worked for Colin Hayes at the world-renowned Lindsay Park training complex, and spent a few months working in a stable in Ireland. On returning to Australia, Darren worked at Lindsay Park Stud.

In 1990, Darren moved to Stawell and began working as a farrier, servicing trainers in the Wimmera and Western District areas of Victoria, he then began breaking-in horses for a large state wide client base before getting his licence.

He was country Victoria’s leading trainer for eight seasons from 2005/06; including training more than 100 winners in each of those last eight seasons, including 142 in 2009/10 and 114.5 in 2010/11.

In 2011/12, Weir notched 174 winners highlighted by Stakes winners Platelet and Wealth Princess. Top class grey Puissance De Lune headed up the stable in 2013 with multiple stakes wins, however it was the spring of 2014 that Weir broke through with his first Victorian Group 1 win with Trust In A Gust who took out both the Toorak Handicap and Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes.

In 2015/16, Weir would capture the "Race that stops a nation" The Melbourne Cup with Prince of Penzance in a fairy tale story for female ride Michelle Payne.
