The Novocastrian was forced to give up his dream of being a champion jockey at age 17 due to rising weight. His first winner as a trainer was Secret Jim in August 1973 at Newcastle and was ridden by his brother Ron.
Perry blazed what is now a well-worn path when he took Choisir to Royal Ascot in 2003 and stunned the locals with two slashing wins. Choisir has become a successful stallion, as have other Perry-tuned sprinters Fastnet Rock and Slipper winner Stratum.
