About

Gai is ‘Racing’s First Lady’.  She has been a trailblazer for women in racing since being granted her trainer’s licence in 1992, after a long apprenticeship with legendary father Tommy Smith. The young Gai Smith worked as a model and actor, including in Australian drama The Young Doctors.

Gai took over Tulloch Lodge from her father in 1994 and has since trained more than 100 Group One winners and won seven Sydney trainers’ titles, finishing second on nine occasions.

She won her first Melbourne Cup with Fiorente in 2013, trained her second Triple Crown winner in 2012 with Pierro (her first being Dance Hero) and took out the inaugural The Championships Queen of the Turf Stakes in 2014 with Diamond Drille. On year later, Gai would return to The Championships and claim the Cellarbrations Queen of the Turf Stakes again, this time with Amanpour
